Описание к видео Malignant Otitis Externa

Malignant Otitis Externa
Malignant otitis externa is a severe infection of the external auditory canal, usually caused by bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It typically affects older adults with underlying conditions like diabetes or a compromised immune system. The infection can spread beyond the ear canal to nearby structures, including the skull base, leading to potentially life-threatening complications such as skull base osteomyelitis or cranial nerve palsies. Symptoms may include severe ear pain, earmdischarge, fever, and difficulty hearing.
Treatment often involves prolonged courses of antibiotics, sometimes administered intravenously, along with close monitoring by your healthcare provider.
In some cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to remove infected tissue or drain abscesses.
Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are crucial for a favorable outcome.
For elderly diabetics with unremitting ear pain the message is to visit the ENT Specialist early and start treatment as soon as possible.
