Violence broke out in Ganda Twisa subdivision of Tripura's Dhalai district following the death of a youth, Parameshwar Reang on July 12 evening. The clash, which began around 7:30 pm resulted in significant damage to properties.

Kiran Chowdhury, a cargo auto driver, lost his only source of income when a mob of approximately 250 people started vandalizing properties. He recounted his experience.

"In the evening, I parked my three-wheeler in the garage. It was my only source of income. Around 200 to 250 persons started vandalism, arson, and unleashed violence. I had to hide myself in the forest. The attackers brought my auto-rickshaw out of the garage and vandalized it. They also set it on fire," Chowdhury said.

Instances of violence were also reported from Haripur, Narayanpur, Pisligas, Durgapur, and Kalajhari, where around 15 houses, 8 shops, and several vehicles were torched during the clash.

"We were at home when all of a sudden people came in several vehicles and set our houses on fire. The money and valuable items that were in the house had been stolen. Motorcycles and vehicles had also been set on fire by the angry mob," said Samir Roy, a resident of Haripur.

Meanwhile, the internet has been snapped and a curfew has been imposed in parts of the district. Several troops of CRPF, Tripura State Rifles, and Tripura police have also been deployed to prevent any further incidents. Despite these measures, tension remains high in the subdivision.

Speaking to the media Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Chandra Joy Reang said that a peace meeting was called where people from all communities took part.

"Today (Saturday) we conducted a peace meeting. People from all communities attended the peace meeting and assured that they will work with the administration to restore normalcy which has also provided a boost to our confidence. However, we are not taking any chances and have deployed additional forces in vulnerable and sensitive areas. We are hopeful that the situation will get back to normal now," the SDM added.

The violence was triggered after 21-year-old Parameshwar Reang succumbed to injuries sustained during a scuffle with four individuals. The district administration has confirmed that the four individuals involved in the attack have been arrested.
