Tripura: Tension grips Gandatwisa in Dhalai after youth’s death, section 144 imposed

Section 144 was imposed and large contingents of CRPF, Tripura State Rifles, and police personnel were deployed across the Gandatwisa subdivision (formerly known as Gandacherra) in Dhalai district of Tripura after tension flared following the death of a youth identified as Parameshwar Reang. Reang succumbed to the injuries he suffered a few days back during a scuffle with four individuals. 

Local sources said Reang went to a local fair where he was assaulted by four persons at the Cricket Stadium. He suffered grave injuries and was immediately rushed to the nearest hospital.

Later, he was referred to GBP Hospital for advanced medical attention. However, Reang breathed his last on Friday night.

Along with the news of his demise, tension gripped the entire subdivision following which heavy security arrangements were put in place in the area.

The situation turned highly volatile after attacks were launched on some residences. So far no confirmed report on the number of families who had faced violence could be traced. As many as six security personnel including CRPF men suffered injuries while trying to defuse the tension.

Speaking on the issue, District Magistrate and Collector, Dhalai district Saju Vaheed said that all the four individuals who were involved in the attack had been arrested.

Reacting to the issue, Tipra Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarman urged the people of Gandatwisa to maintain peace and tranquillity.
