This is a video of Little Owl standing and grooming on stone walls and then looking out to check what’s up!
It’s another summer evening near the end of July 2024 and we are in the fields at the edge of a grouse moor in the Yorkshire Pennines.
Our local Little Owl is watching us from a fencepost around 50 metres away.
The Owl is looking round for small food items to hunt.
The Owl made a short flight and when it was well away from us, we crept a bit closer and we are still hidden behind the stone wall.
The Owl is now on top of the wall but it is slightly concealed by the stones.
The Owl has spotted us – it does not seem concerned by our presence.
If you didn’t know the Owl was here, I would be very easy to miss it as it blends in to the colour of the lichen on the walls.
Initially, it looks like the Little Owl may be about to have a quick rest, but it can’t resist reacting to the noise of traffic and to that of other birds.
The Owl has jumped back up onto the fencepost and is watching for what is going on.
It has spotted a couple of dog walkers about 100 metres away and watches them.
It has finally spotted us and gives us a good stare.
This is one of the owl favourite posts – it often stands here to do some grooming. The evidence of owl droppings below the post shows how regularly this is used.
It finally takes flight as it looks for something to investigate.
The Owl has landed on some Millstone Grit rocks about 60 metres away.
There are more owl droppings on these rocks as well.
It nervously watches as local Swallows fly past at high speed.
However, it soon gets spooked as an adult rabbit jumps up so the Owl flies off.
We return to the car, and we spot another little Owl about 10 metres away.
It’s on a stone wall next to a well-used public footpath – it will take to flight as soon as any-one opens the gate, but for now, it’s happy to stay here and do some grooming.
We’ve loved seeing this family of Little Owls – they have real personalities.
