HOW TO RESCUE A MAN OVERBOARD - Save a Life - Anderson & Williamson Turn

HOW TO MAKE A MAYDAY CALL:    • HOW TO MAKE AN EMERGENCY DISTRESS CAL...

We asked you what some of your biggest fears were on the water and on the boat. MANY of you said your worst nightmare was falling overboard. Of course, if you're alone on the boat the best thing you can do is wear the kill switch but what about if you have friends or family on board? In this video we teach both the Williamson Turn and the Anderson Turn. Knowing one of these turns like the back of your hand can make you feel confident in your ability to take a potentially scary situation and turn it into a cool, calm, collected AND prepared one. We recommend picking a method that makes the most sense for you and your boat and practicing it while traveling at different speeds and directions.

Williamson turn:
Ideal in reduced visibility (i.e. fog, nighttime, high seas). If executed properly it positions the ship on the exact reciprocal course on where the victim fell over. Original speed should be maintained in order to stay on course.
1. Man falls overboard
2. Point at victim and yell MAN OVERBOARD
3. Throw a life ring at victim
4. If possible keep eyes on victim, point fingers at victim – have designated look out
5. Captain turns hard to side that person fell overboard on as to keep them safely out of the props.
6. Once vessel reaches 60 degrees off original course turn wheel hard to opposite side.
7. Once vessel is 20 degrees short of reciprocal course bring wheel to midship.
8. Vessel with naturally line up exactly 180 degrees of original course.

Ex. MAN FALLS OVERBOARD ON STARBOARD SIDE - If original course is 0 degrees North. Man falls overboard on STB side, turn wheel hard to STB until compass hits 60 degrees. Once compass hits 60 degrees turn wheel hard to PRT until you are 20 degrees short of reciprocal course. The reciprocal course of 0 is 180. 20 degrees short of 180 will be 200. When your compass hits 200, bring your rudder to midship (aka center your wheel) and your vessel will straighten out to be exactly on your reciprocal course.

Pros: Puts you on exact reciprocal course. Great for nighttime, low visibility, fog, high seas, stormy weather.
Cons: Takes longer to perform, keeps your victim in the water longer.

Anderson turn:
Fastest recovery method. Best for clear visibility and calm seas. Best for ships with tight turning characteristics.

1. Man falls overboard
2. Point at victim and yell MAN OVERBOARD
3. Throw a life ring at victim
4. If possible keep eyes on victim, point fingers at victim – have designated look out
5. Captain turns hard to side that person fell overboard on as to keep them safely out of the props.
6. Once vessel reaches 250 degrees off original course bring rudder to midship (aka center your wheel)

Ex. MAN FALLS OVERBOARD ON STARBOARD SIDE - If original course is 0 degrees North. Man falls overboard on STB side, turn wheel hard to STB until compass hits 250 degrees. Once compass hits 250 bring your rudder to midship (aka center your wheel) and your vessel will straighten out and intersect where your victim fell overboard.

Ex. MAN FALLS OVERBOARD ON PORT SIDE - If original course is 95 degrees South East. Man falls overboard on PRT side, turn wheel hard to PRT until compass hits 205 degrees. Once compass hits 205 bring your rudder to midship (aka center your wheel) and your vessel will straighten out and intersect where your victim fell overboard.

Pros: FAST. Puts you at an intersect of your victim. Great for good visibility, calm seas.
Cons: Only good for vessels with tight turning characteristics. If you don’t see your victim right away your are now traveling away from your victim as opposed to being on your exact reciprocal course.
