Physical Impossibility presents: Hercules Returns (1993)

Hercules Returns (dir David Parker, 1993) is a lost classic of Australian cinema and a genuinely hilarious cut of outsider cinema. Brad McBain (David Argue of The Return of Captain Invincible and Razorback) quits his job for a corporate cinema chain in order to reopen an independent picture house. When his old boss sabotages the opening night, Brad and pals (including Mad Max icon Bruce Spence) have to improvise a live script for the old Italian sword-and-sandal film, Samson and His Mighty Challenge.

In a lineage with Woody Allen's What's Up, Tiger Lily? and MST3K, the film was inspired by the live performances of Australian comedy crew Double Take (lead by Des Mangan and Sally Patience), who made their name re-dubbing movies like Astro Zombies and The Bees live. Businessman Phil Jaroslow caught Double Take Meet Hercules and decided to fund a film version, hiring David Parker to come up with the framing story. The result was an instant cult favourite, still well-loved and quoted all over the world.

The film was released in the UK in 1993, but has been out of circulation for almost 20 years. Physical Impossibility presents this rare screening at the Grosvenor Cinema, Glasgow, by arrangement with LA Entertainment Worldwide and as part of Scalarama 2015.
