The addition of fertilizer to a planted aquarium can make a world of difference as far as plant growth goes. While dosing fertilizer is not always necessary, it can help revive plants that have been subjected to nutrient poor water conditions which may have caused yellowing leaves and stunted growth.

Phosphate is a compound which plants use in the biosynthesis of proteins, nucleic acids and other fundamental structures. In aquatic plants, a vast majority of this phosphate is taken up though receptors found in leaf cells where it is then transported to other parts of the organism. An adequate concentration of phosphate in the aquarium is often seen as 1-3 mg/l or ppm.

Overdosing phosphate can be a dangerous. Phosphates are used by almost all other organisms in the aquarium especially microorganisms. If concentrations of phosphate are too high, meaning plants in the aquarium cant process all that is available, algae and cyanobacteria will commonly take advantage of this environment and begin to grow rapidly.

This is a situation we always want to avoid, and is why we built our solution and doses to contain a minimal concentration of 2 mg/L. Adding this concentration to a heavily planted aquarium 2-3 times per week should not present algae problems but unfortunately when it comes to algae, several other factors are involved.
