Magnetic Field, Oersted's Experiment and Right Hand Rule to find direction of magnetic field around a current carrying wire.

Magnetic field is a vector field in the neighbourhood of a magnet in which magnetic forces are observable. Magnetic fields such as that of Earth cause magnetic compass needles and other permanent magnets to line up in the direction of the field.

We look at Oersted’s experiment and how it established the relationship between electric current and magnetism. He found that magnetic field is also created around a current carrying wire. We can use Right Hand Rule to find the direction of this Magnetic Field.

Right Hand Rule: We can find the magnetic field that is caused by moving charges using a right-hand rule. The magnetic field made by a current in a straight wire curls around the wire in a ring. You can find it by pointing your right thumb in the direction of the current in the wire and curling your fingers. Your fingers will be curled in the same direction as the magnetic field around the wire.
