Bruce Lee was well known for incorporating philosophy into martial arts. In his interview from the Pierre Berton Show in 1971, he explains the dichotomy of mindsets behind his practice: instinct and control.

You can find these contrasting styles in the climbing world. Out of your climbing friends, some can be easily identified as instinct-based, or intuitive climbers, while the others are control-based, or analytical climbers. Chances are, you likely favor one style over the other.

This video will examine these two different approaches to climbing and their advantages and disadvantages. We’ll also look at a few case studies that highlight applications of both styles.
