Full gameplay longplay, playthrough walkthrough and guide to Zero Team as Big-O. Zero Team is a fairly unknown scrolling beat'em up from Seibu Kaihatsu, none of the Randomised Gaming team report seeing it in the 90s in the arcades in the UK or Europe. This hasn't been helped by the fact the game proved hard to emulate until HAMSTER Corporation released a version of it. There are quite a few revisions of the game, but the Hamster Arcade Archives release uses the original two Japan builds of the game, old and new. The main change between them is that the super attack does more damage and also takes more of your health in the new revision compared to the old.

Sadly this release doesn't include the later 2000 version which had more enemies on screen and some other changes, while the New Zero Team version changes the stage order for some reason, it's hard to see them getting a separate release as well.

The game has you taking on a horde of enemies in a rather faceless evil organisation, as you attempt to rescue a kidnapped woman in a blue dress. Why she's been kidnapped or who she is is never explained. In fact the story telling in this game is pretty much zero as the game doesn't even have an opening intro in attract mode like Final Fight.

You get the choice of four player characters Ace, Speed, Spin and Spin-O each with slightly different attributes. Where Zero Team really stands out is that each character has a very large selection of movies to use in-game far more so than most scrolling beat'em ups. In fact the balancing and gameplay in this one really is first class making it a better game in the genre than titles like Final Fight. The animation is also excellent as are the pixel visuals, but in 1993 they were up against some tough competition. Music is by far the weakest element of the games with the music being okay at best.

All in all it's a great addition to the genre and one that more people will get to play now that it is available via the Arcade Archives. The fact Hamster is the first company to correctly emulate it means this is a must pick up.
