Mutation Nation Arcade Archive NEO GEO Playthrough on PlayStation 4 (PS4) [4K60]

Full gameplay longplay, playthrough, walkthrough and guide to Mutation Nation for the NEO GEO MVS via the ACA NEOGEO. SNK weren't known for their scrolling beat'em ups and for the most part never quite got the genre right. Released in 1992 this was one of the last games SNK made in the genre for arcade only Sengoku 2 would follow in 1992 and Noise Factory would develop Sengoku 3 in 2001.

Mutation Nation turned out to be quite popular so it was surprising that the game never got a sequel. That said it was a rather tough scrolling beat'em up / brawler and one that is very tight on the health. As you don't get health back on finishing a stage and only one life bar per credit making for a tough one credit clear. Health is only granted via the power up orbs and even then they only give you one section of the bar back. So in two player mode, there is very little health to go around.

Solid graphics for the time, combat is fairly quick and simple, there isn't a huge amount of moves or items to pick up. You can hold up to five super attacks at any one time, you can also use health to use a super so long as you aren't in the red section. There is a little too much reuse of certain enemies in the game that's for sure. Some enemies are used too often while others are underused and only appear once or twice. The last stage is a bit of a chore having to re-fight all the bosses again including the last one you just fought. The game also lacks key invulnerable frames for the player on recovering from certain attacks as you can see in some of the boss fights in the video. So far the best we've done on one credit is the second boss. This is one game which you aren't going to finish with no damage, unless you are cheating.

Fun fact the AES version of the game has an extra intro scene during the attract mode, showing the game's story not seen in MVS mode.
