The Voigtlander 58mm 1.4 is the second best lens in my bag. Let me explain.

I have owned this lens since 2016. For two straight years, it was the only lens I cared to use for my personal work. Even after accumulating more lenses, I still prefer to use it whenever I can.

It is superior in color rendition and contrast compared to all my Nikon lenses, starting from F/2.8 and above, but suffers chromatic aberrations and lack of sharpness below F/2. But even if that’s the case, it still produces beautiful images—but this is subjective since some people do not like having blurry images.

Even though this lens is superior in many aspects, it still has crippling qualities. This lens is a manual focus only lens, as you may already know, so it is not a good idea to use this as your primary lens with kids or with any moving subjects if you’re planning to use it wide open. It has a fairly long focus throw. It will take time to get your subject in focus. This is not a lens for fast shooting or impatient photographers.

Obviously you’re stuck with 58mm focal length when using this lens. And this is why I’m convinced the 58mm is the second best lens in my bag. Unless I’m doing personal work or I need to shoot photos at 50 or 58mm, I believe lens choice should often be pragmatic in nature. If I’m shooting an engagement or wedding, the 70-200 or 24-120mm might be a better primary choice for me rather than the 58. If I’m doing landscape, obviously I want a fairly or ultra wide angle lens. And even though this lens can shoot fairly close to its subject, I’d rather take my macro lens when doing close up work.

With that being said, this is a lens that never leaves my camera bag regardless of what shoot I am doing. The 58mm focal length complements most focal lengths that are in my camera bag, and if push comes to shove and I only can bring one lens on any situation, I know this is the lens I’d rather keep.
