In this video, with the help of a new special guest star, I explain the technique of masking data. This allows us to compare two gridded netcdf or grib fields together, or compare a field to a threshold. In this way you can calculate the frequency of threshold exceedance, which allows you to make calculation in a data set as in the following examples:
Number of freezing events in a period
Number of events of precipitation extremes
Heatwave statistics
Number of rainy days days i.e. with rainfall greater than 0.1 mm
and so on... the masking technique is extremely powerful when combined with other CDO commands.
