Grapes, safe or toxic to dogs? Toxic!

Red, green, seedless, or seeded grapes are all toxic to dogs, and even though we are not yet sure exactly why, we believe it is either because of a toxic substance produced by mold, tartaric acid, or an aspirin-like drug naturally found in grapes which causes a decreased blood flow to the kidneys thereby causing kidney damage.

Clinical signs can take up to two to three days to develop and may include nausea, inappetence, uremic breath, abdominal pain, excessive thirst, and excessive urination. In severe cases of kidney failure, the dog may stop producing urine, go into a coma and eventually die.

Medical treatment includes inducing vomiting and administrating activated charcoal, but if excessive amounts of grapes were ingested, your dog will need to receive aggressive intravenous fluid therapy to help flush out the toxins and to support his blood pressure, which may take up to 48 hours to stabilize.
