Capital structure refers to the proportion of debt (money borrowed from banks and financial institutions) and equity (money invested by the owners and shares sold on the stock exchange) employed by a firm to run its operations.

According the pecking order theory, a firm will first utilise its retrained earning, then through debt and lastly through equity. The purpose of this session is t explore whether businesses are using the pecking order theory to finance their businesses.

The session will also discuss the challenges faced by businesses in accessing bank finance and the problems associated with paying back bank loans.

Mr. Arsalan Tauqir Khawaja is a Senior Lecturer in Finance at The University of Wolverhampton Business School. A Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, he is currently pursuing a PhD. Finance at Birmingham City University and has previously completed an M.Sc. Finance and Management at The University of Essex. He has more than 10 years of experience in consulting on economic reforms, private sector development, corporate finance, and Project/Programme management of SME development programmes. He has advised companies, financial institutions, and regulators in Pakistan. He served as the Team Leader of “Business Edge Quality Assurance”- a joint collaborative programme between SME Business Support Fund, Ministry of Finance, Government of Pakistan and International Finance Corporation- World Bank (Pakistan). He also represented SME Business Support Fund, Ministry of Finance, Government of Pakistan at the State Bank of Pakistan- SME Finance Focus Group Meetings.
