Finding the way from foster care to fame, with Jimmy Wayne

The past need not control the future. For Jimmy Wayne, a childhood of abuse, abandonment, and being caught up in a dysfunctional foster care system, the past serves as a creative touchstone to reach out and help others. In this interview with Skip Prichard, Jimmy talks about how his past has informed his music and writing.

Author of “Walk to Beautiful: The Power of Love and a Homeless Kid Who Found the Way,” Jimmy says his childhood was “living hell.” But due to the personal outreach of others who identify with his art, he is quick to point out, “My story tells the life of the majority of kids in the system.”

After being abandoned by his abusive parents, Jimmy became homeless at the age of 15 because he could no longer put up with the violence while living in a group home. As a runaway he was put in jail. Finally, he found himself in the foster home of a loving elderly couple. Their constant affirmation and demonstration of their love helped shape the man he became.

Jimmy’s life, despite his success, is still marred by depression and loneliness, and old ways of thinking can be hard to break. “When things are going really well, I’m probably the most miserable because I’m functional when I’m under stress and struggle.” Yet he’s come so far due to the power of love.
