Clan Cunningham and the Glencairn Aisle - Part 2

Built in 1600 by the 7th Earl of Glencairn, James Cunningham. The crypt below has at least 21 family burials. The monument is the oldest of its kind in Ayrshire and like the 1641 Dunlop Aisle and the 1601 Bargany Aisle it may have been brightly painted as some paint seems to remain around the children's statues.


The aisle and monument have been through several cycles of neglect and restoration with damage from children from the old school in the church, locals robbing stone for whetstones, labourers breaking ito the crypt looking for valuables!


The 14th Earl is commemorated here in regard of his patronage of Robert Burns and Cunningham family memorials continue to be added to the walls.
