This project is taken from a book by Patrick Spielman titled "Fun & Easy Scroll Saw Projects". I made it with the possiblity of it being a gift for someone. The lid has a backer piece that matches the inside of the rim of the body of the box and that is what holds the lid in place. In his build of the project the painted the backer red to show through the fretwork. In the book he has an example of small decorative pieces cut from and acrylic mirror so I picked up some peel and stick small mirrors with the intent to stick them to some plexiglass I have to experiment with. But, my wife suggested that the fretwork in the lid would look good with a mirror behind it. So, since I always listen to my wife I decided to try it. I do like the effect but would have liked it better with a thinner wood for the lid. I used 1/4 maghogany for the lid and 1 7/8 ash for the body of the box. The bottom of the box and the lid backer are 1/8 baltic birch plywood. The ash was very difficult to cut and I expected that. My saw does not like to cut thick dense wood. I used a #12 blade with a lot of tension and cut very slowly. It mostly cut very straight but did leave a little outward bow on some areas that I was able to sand out for the most part.
