Hudson River State Hospital opened on October 18, 1871, and closed in January 2012. Many of the buildings were designed by architect Frederick Clarke Withers. The grounds were designed by Calvert Vaux and Frederick Law Olmsted.

This portion of the campus closed in 2003. In 2007 a large portion of the building was destroyed by fire caused by lightning. The upper floors of the admin building on were destroyed by fire on April 27, 2018. According to the Fairview Fire District Chief this time it was arson.

Much of the campus will be demolished with only a few being saved and incorporated into a $300 million mixed-use project called Hudson Heritage.
