Polynomial :
An algebraic expression in which the variables have only non-negative integral powers is called a polynomial.

Ex: 2x+5,
3x2+5x-8,
m2-√2.m+2
These are polynomials

NOTE: While writing a Polynomial in standard form terms should be written in descending order of their degrees.

Polynomial in one variable: If a polynomial has only one variable, then it is called a polynomial in one variable.

Generally polynomials are denoted by p(x), q(x), r(x), f(x), g(x), .…etc.

General Forms Of Polynomials :
 General form of a Linear polynomial is ax+b (a ≠ 0)
 General form of a Quadratic polynomial is ax2+bx+c (a ≠ 0)
 General form of a Cubic polynomial is ax3+bx2+cx+d (a ≠ 0)

General form of nth degree polynomial

Degree of a Term/Monomial:
Degree of constant term is zero

Degree of the polynomial:
Degree of polynomial is the highest degree of its variable term.
Ex: 1) 3x2y + 2y - 8
3 1 0
degree of the polynomial is 3.
2) 5xy2 - 3x2y3 + 3x
3 5 1
degree of the polynomial is 5.

Value of a Polynomial:
Let p(x) be a polynomial in variable 'x’
By putting any value instead of 'x' , we get the value of the polynomial.

Zero of the Polynomial
If the value of a polynomial p(x) is zero, at x = a, then 'a' is called zero of the polynomial p(x).

Ex : Find the zero of the polynomial p(x) = 2x + 3 ?
Sol : Given that, p(x) = 2x + 3

If x = 3, p(3) = 2(3) – 6
= 6 – 6
= 0
p(x) = 0, at x = 3

∴ 3 is the zero of the polynomial p(x)

Zero of the polynomial is also known as 'root' of the polynomial.

Number of zeroes of a polynomials
A Linear polynomial has only one zero.
A Quadratic polynomial has at most two zeros.
A cubic polynomial has at most three zeros.
