What To Plant - And What To NOT Plant - In August For Zones 9 & 10

August is hot & humid here in San Diego, so let's talk about what you can plant this month here and in other parts of zones 9 and 10.

As summer comes to an end, we're ramping up for another change of season. The days are already getting shorter, but it's still hot.

This is one last hoorah for a lot of warm season crops, but you can even start some cool season crops as early as August. It's not really recommended, though.

For warm season crops, you can get in a last round of succession planting. Think about crops that are quick to harvest, can mature with the change in weather, and can handle the limited sunlight. That last point is a HUGE factor.

If you're going to start some crops this month, I recommend sticking with things you can direct sow, such as beans, melons, cucumbers, squash, and pumpkins.

If you already have seedlings of eggplant, peppers, or tomatoes started, you can still put them in the ground. It's not really worth starting them from seed this late, though.

When transplanting this time of year, it's so tough for those baby plants. Make sure you:
-Water BEFORE transplanting
-Water DURING transplanting
-Water AFTER transplanting

That moisture is going to evaporate or get sucked away so fast. It's really important that the roots don't dry out. If you want to do one more bonus step, you can protect the plant with shade cloth for the first few days or so.

Let's not forget about flowers! Good thing there are some varieties that LOVE the heat.
