Dholak is a very popular folk drum of northern India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh as well. It is barrel-shaped, at times a cylindrical drum, with skins on both sides. Dholak has one side which has a high pitch and another side that has a lower pitch and is very popular in folk music.
As one moves around North India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, there is considerable variation in the technique to play dholak. There is variation in the use of hands, sticks, and various combinations of both.
Pandit Subhash Kanaujia is a percussionist from Jangalpur Kathirao, of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. In this series titled "The King of Beats," we showcase a portrait of the musician. Because of his extraordinary skills in playing the Dholak, the Governor of UP bestowed him the title of "Dholak Samrat " in 2002. This video showcases his passion and his versatility in playing Dholak. Subhash Kanaujia has been working diligently on recording the different percussion forms from about 29 states of India.
