Turmeric has been used for a variety of illnesses and plays a role in the treatment of quite a few skin conditions as well. In a review on this topic in the journal Clinical and Experimental Dermatology, one of the references mentioned a double blind randomised controlled study and suggests its effectiveness in reducing the regrowth of hair in the armpits and also lightened the skin at that site.
