Inflammation is the key component behind muscle weakness, and it is all due to the inability for muscles to tolerate the forces that have been placed on them. When muscles lose the ability to tolerate forces, they lose the ability to contract efficiently. When they lose the ability to contract efficiently, they lose the ability to shorten effectively. When a muscle can no longer shorten effectively, then the opposite muscles will not lengthen effectively — therefore, the opposite/antagonist muscles show up as being tight.

The opposite muscles have increased stretched reflex activity (muscle spindle), with reduced stretch reflex activity on the shortening side. With this decreased spindle activity on the shortening side, the muscles' ability to tolerate forces also decreases. Overall strength/force output decreases in the inhibited muscle.

In this situation, where muscles lose the ability to contract efficiently, it takes less physical stress to create a pain response. There is an inverse relationship between mechanoreception (spindle activity) and nociception (pain). When the sensitivity of the muscle spindle decreases, the sensitivity of the pain receptors increases.

When inflammation negatively affects muscle function, the associated muscle weaknesses are like having loose battery cables. The communication between the nervous system and the muscular system decreases. The brain and nervous system can’t get proper input to the muscles, therefore these muscles cannot fire on demand (a timing issue). When the muscles lose the ability to contract efficiently, they can’t do their job to stabilize joints and protect the body from injury.
