The Supreme Court of Canada recently released its judgment in R. v. I.M., 2025 SCC 23. This case is extremely important in the area of youth criminal justice because its focus is section 72 of the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YJCA).

Section 72 of the YCJA is of considerable importance because if applied, it means that a youth will be sentenced as an adult. This of course carries significant consequences on the youth being sentenced according to that section.

In this interview, I discuss the case of I.M. with my very distinguished and knowledgeable guests and colleagues The Honourable Justice Brock Jones and Defence Counsel Emma Rhodes.

Justice Jones sits in the Ontario Court of Justice at 10 Armoury in Toronto, Ontario. He often sits in Youth Court and has delivered numerous decisions in the area of Youth Criminal Justice. Prior to his appointment to the Bench, Justice Jones was an Assistant Crown Attorney who often prosecuted youth cases.
