Ella (Kathryn Bernardo) is the daughter of Samuel (Michael de Mesa) and Fernanda (Agot Isidro) and heiress of the influential Villarreal family whose uncontested political reign favored the rich and powerful and ignored the impoverished. Although kind, warm, and well-meaning, Ella, after many years of studying in the most prestigious schools around the world, forms an unlikely friendship with Isabel (Julia Montes), a young, ambitious lass left by her biological parents to her foster mother (Janice de Belen), who desires to escape her derelict neighborhood. Despite their budding friendship, Isabel develops growing contempt and disdain toward Ella and finds out the latter's family is responsible for her foster family's suffering.

In a political upheaval and maelstrom, the Villarreals are deposed, with Ella bearing the sins of her ancestors and parents at the wrath of the common populace. Abused, downtrodden, and with no one else to turn to, Ella vows to return to wreak havoc and destroy those who have wronged her and her loved ones.
