How to Care for Your Adenium Plant

Here are some tips for caring Adenium, also known as desert rose, plants.

Soil mix
Use a well-draining potting mix for succulents, such as one with pumice or crushed granite. You can also add layers of gravel above and below the soil to prevent root rot.
Repotting
Repot during the growing season, not when the plant is dormant. Before repotting, make sure the soil is completely dry and gently remove the plant from its pot. Knock away old soil from the roots and remove any dead or rotted roots. Apply a fungicide or antibacterial solution to any cuts or bruises. Place the plant in its new pot, spreading out the roots as you add potting mix. Water the plant thoroughly after a week, but make sure the water drains well. Avoid letting the plant sit in soggy soil or standing water.
Other tips
Adenium plants prefer bright, indirect light and a shallow pot or tray. During hot weather, water them generously, but avoid keeping the soil soggy. In cooler weather, water them less frequently but thoroughly, and avoid watering at all when nighttime temperatures are consistently below 50°F. To encourage blooms, use a fertilizer rich in phosphorus, along with a balanced diet of nitrogen and potassium.
