Therefore combustion is an exothermic reaction. Three requirements for combustion are a fuel, oxygen and heat to start the reaction. Combustion needs all three requirements to take place, without any of the three, it will not happen. Combustion is a chemical reaction because the bonds between the atoms in the reactants are broken which then form new products.
