Combustion is another word for burning. Combustion is when a fuel reacts with oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water, releasing excess heat energy into the surroundings. Therefore combustion is an exothermic reaction. Three requirements for combustion are a fuel, oxygen and heat to start the reaction. Combustion needs all three requirements to take place, without any of the three, it will not happen. Combustion is a chemical reaction because the bonds between the atoms in the reactants are broken which then form new products.
