AUTHENTIC Techniques for PLACING and ATTACHING Viking Age CORDS and BRAIDS- EVIDENCE and TUTORIALS!

We are looking at the historical evidence for the placement and attachment of cords and braids on Viking Age garments. From hoods to trousers, these additions appear all over the Norse and Anglo-Saxon world, decorating and protecting the labour intensive fabrics.

We will cover a variety of finds with different placement options, and look at the stitches used to secure them down, along with hints and tips I’ve gathered over the years for combining utility and aesthetics!

All the options here are well evidenced and most have more than one example in the archaeological record, but they are not the only ways, if you have found other interesting examples in your research, please let me know!

Cords and braids are not the only ways to decorate and protect your clothes, tablet braid, silk trims as well as cuffs, hemline and neckline facings/additions in contrasting fabrics are also options we will talk about on the channel, and can be using in combination with the techniques we cover today, but this video is just about placing and attaching cords and braids.
