A force of nature.

Whether lighting up the faces of fans and prospects with his infectious enthusiasm, or working closely and intensely with his family in the gym - Barry McGuigan is passion personified.

He was a lot of things to a lot of people. A fighter, a champion and an Irishman. However, perhaps most importantly, he was a symbol of hope at a time when North and Southern Ireland was in disarray. Everything came to a halt when the 'Clones Cyclone' slipped through the ropes. He was ferocious, intelligent and special.

McGuigan once said his fights felt 'a little like sunshine' at a time when the 'shadows ran deep'. Now involved with his own company, Cyclone Promotions, he is fully focused on the future of his impressive stable.

"I'm not a promoter, that's not my side of the business. I'm a manager. My boys promote and my son trains. We sort of decompartmentalise the business... I'm the front of house with this ugly face!"

Training between Wattlebridge and Smithborough amateur clubs in County Monaghan, a young Barry McGuigan had established himself in the seventies as an All-Ireland champion. He competed in the 1978 Commonwealth games, capturing the gold medal for Ireland and displaying exceptional ability. Barry was a realist, understanding his style could be well-suited amongst the professional circuit.
