Today, we will discuss what steps to take after a positive pregnancy test. When a woman's pregnancy test comes back positive, we check the beta HCG levels in her blood. The value of beta HCG indicates the strength of the pregnancy.
When the beta HCG value is above 100, we consider it a positive sign. Higher values may even suggest the possibility of twins, although it is not a definitive indication. If the beta HCG value is relatively low, such as around 100-300, we usually schedule a follow-up appointment after one week to monitor the increase in beta HCG levels and perform a scan.
During the follow-up appointment, we look for the presence of a gestational sac in the uterus and assess the growth and development of the pregnancy. A beta HCG value of 2000-3000 at this stage is considered good. After two weeks, we schedule another important scan to evaluate the progress of the pregnancy.
During the second scan, we carefully examine the uterus to ensure the presence of the gestational sac. Additionally, we look for the presence of the yolk sac and fetal pole. Ideally, we also hope to detect a heartbeat in the fetal pole during this scan. If a pregnancy is not visible in the uterus or its location is uncertain, further investigation is necessary to rule out ectopic pregnancy, where the embryo implants outside the uterus.
It is essential to maintain a balanced mindset after a positive pregnancy test. The blood test alone does not indicate clinical pregnancy. The confirmation of clinical pregnancy occurs when a heartbeat is observed during the scan. Until then,
