Australia's public holidays mark important events like Christmas, Easter, Anzac Day, even the King’s birthday. But did you know there’s no NATIONAL public holiday to celebrate Indigenous culture?

In this episode of Paint it Blak, Emma explains why it’s time to follow New Zealand in acknowledging and celebrating our First Nations peoples with a national public holiday.

And with West Australian Premier Roger Cook publicly saying he’d like to see another public holiday in WA, why not lead the way and make it a day dedicated to Indigenous Australians?

A day where everyone, from every background, could immerse themselves in the richness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, learn about Dreamtime stories, listen to ancient languages, appreciate incredible art, understand the deep connection to Country.

Emma says it would be a huge step towards true reconciliation, building bridges of understanding, and celebrating the incredible diversity that makes Australia, well, Australia!

ABOUT
Director of the 100% First-Nations and female-owned Garlett Group, Emma Garlett is a Nyungar-Nyiyaparli-Yamatji woman.

Emma is also a First Nations leader, a Teaching Fellow at the Law School at the University of Western Australia, and an Adjunct Professor at Federation University.

Her extensive experience includes legal practice at a top-tier law firm and strategy work at BHP.

A columnist with The West Australian newspaper, with published works in peer reviewed academic journals, Emma is dedicated to ensuring Indigenous perspectives are integral to shaping impactful solutions.

In Paint it Blak, Emma applies an Indigenous lens to current issues and seeks to educate others to bring them on a journey of reconciliation to make a better Australia for all.
