What is an Electric Arc Furnace and how does it work?

There has been a massive transformation in electric arc furnace technology and production in the last seventy years.

The lower environmental impact and reduced cost of the EAF route of steelmaking, compared to the BF/BOS route, will lead to an increased use of the EAF process in comparison to BF/BOS steelmaking.

The availability of sufficient electricity supply using renewable energy is key for the wider adoption of EAF steelmaking if net zero carbon emissions are to be achieved by 2050, where the development of a sustainable cost effective hydrogen economy is also vital.
