It is now legal in Nevada to possess and use up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana in a private residence. But a person can still be cited or arrested for:

Possessing more than 2.5 ounces of marijuana.
Using marijuana in public
Growing marijuana (unless you live more than 25 miles away from a dispensary)
Giving marijuana to a child, or
Selling any amount of marijuana (unless you are licensed dispensary acting within the bounds of Nevada law)

Penalties for violating Nevada marijuana laws vary depending on the severity of the crime. For instance, smoking marijuana in public carries $600. A first-time offense of possessing more than 2.5 ounces (but less than 50 pounds) of marijuana is a category E felony. The court will grant eligible defendants a deferral of judgment, which means that the court will dismiss the case if the defendant completes certain court-ordered terms. Otherwise, category E felony convictions carry probation and a suspended sentence. (But if the defendant has two or more prior felony convictions, the court may impose one to four years in Nevada State Prison and up to $5,000 in fines.)

Meanwhile, a first-time offense of selling marijuana is a category B felony carrying up to 6 years in prison and possibly $20,000 in fines (though the court may grant probation instead of prison). And depending on the amount involved, trafficking marijuana can carry a life sentence.
