Here is Episode 1 of our road trip to Nepal from Kolkata, India.

This was our first international road trip. In this video we have talked about the route we took, the itinerary and the documents that are required to visit Nepal with your own car or bike. It was a 7 days trip, so we’ll make 3 episodes of the entire journey.

We started from Kolkata at 4 in the morning with no sunlight and when the city was still sleeping. We crossed Bardhaman, Durgapur, Asansol and just before Dhanbad we took a right turn and passed through Jamui, Begusarai, Samastipur and reached Darbhanga where we halted for the night of our first day of the trip.

There are several entry points to enter Nepal from India. Rauxal is a popular one among them. However it gets very congested since it’s taken by most of the people. There is another less known entry point close to Rauxal called Pipraun Jathi, which is between Darbhanga from India and Janakpur from Nepal side. The border is open from 8 in the morning, till 8 in the evening.
Darbhanga is around 600 kms away from Kolkata and it took us 15 hours to reach there. So we halted there for the night.

Next day, around 8:30 in the morning we started for Nagarkot from Darbhanga. The border is 70 kms away from here and Nagarkot is around 300 kms. and it took us around 9 hrs. We refilled the tank before entering Nepal.
Around 10:30 a.m. we reached the Pipraun Jathi border. There were some army personnels, a check post and a barricade. We made an entry of our vehicle no. and showed the RC of the vehicle and the our IDs. Then they checked our car and we were good to leave India. The entire process didn’t take long as there were very few vehicles crossing the border that time.
After entering Nepal we converted our Indian currencies into Nepali Rupees as that would be required for the Vansar. The conversion rate was 1.6, but we got 1.55 from the stalls near the border.

Bhansar is the permit that is required to take your own vehicle to Nepal. Current rate for Bhansar is 600 NPR per day per vehicle. We took the permit for 10 days, so paid 6000 NPR. Additionally they suggested to pay the road tax at the nearest Yatayat office in Janakpur which is similar to RTO in India.
Next we purchased a sim as our Indian sims didn't work in Nepal. We paid 500 NPR for the Ncell sim having a plan of 20gb data and unlimited local calls. All of these took hardly half an hour.
There were couple of check points at the Nepal side as well, where they check the Bhansar.
Then as suggested we went to the nearest Yatayat office and paid 2010 NPR for the road tax. The Bhanwar and the road tax are the only 2 things that are required to travel inside Nepal with your own vehicle.

We crossed Janakpur, Mithila, Bardibas, Dhulikhel and reached Nagarkot via the B.P. Highway also known as the Banepa Bardibas Highway named after the former leader of Nepal, BP Koirala and was built with the assistance of Government of Japan. The road condition was very good and we reached Nagartok in the evening.
We already had booked hotel Everest Window View via booking.com where there was no pre-payment required.

In the next video we’ll show Nagarkot sightseeing, journey to Kathmandu via Bhaktapur Durbar Square.

Thank you everyone.
