The second Science Plan of the Earth System Governance Project (2018) established ‘Anticipation and Imagination’ as one of its five research lenses. Five years on, we review the state of knowledge production in this rapidly growing the field of inter- and transdisciplinary scholarship and its contribution to Earth system governance. What are the key conceptual and theoretical advances made over these last five years? Which topics and policy domains have dominated our analyses? Which methodological innovations have pushed the boundaries of transdisciplinary and impact?

Exploring how far we have come, this session is the culmination of a community effort to identify the ten most influential insights in anticipatory governance and imagination scholarship over the last five years. The session is organized in three parts: (1) Anticipatory Governance, (2) Imagination, and (3) Linkages and Synthesis. Parts 1 and 2 follow the same pattern: 5 flash talks (3-5 minutes each), presenting one key insight related to one or several publications since 2018, followed by 10-20 minutes of discussion. In the final 20 minutes (Part 3), we discuss the linkages between anticipation and imagination. The integrated understanding of the field emerging from this debate will inform the future work of the Taskforce on Anticipation and Imagination.
