The concept of earth system law (ESL) is gaining increased traction. This event convenes a group of experts to take stock of ESL and its scholarship, and to trace future pathways for its development and potential impact. The discussion is organized around several chapters contained in a book-in-progress that has been submitted for publication consideration to ESG’s Cambridge University Press Series. We attempt to: 1) offer a comprehensive and consolidated in-depth reflection on earth system law, including a state-of-the-art analysis of its scholarship, concepts and emerging themes to date; 2) reflect on the identification and design of principles that could inform the development of earth system law as an episteme and term-of-art, a new framework for rethinking law in the Anthropocene, and to guide more radical and innovative approaches to better govern earth system transformations; and 3) identify future research themes and pathways for earth system law. The moderated discussion is led by the authors of these chapters, who each offer a lightening talk summarising each chapter, followed by an extensive round of collective reflections.
