Bulgaria’s shrinking population: Political instability causing young people to leave

Bulgaria has one of the fastest-shrinking populations in the world.
In the late 1980s, nearly nine million people lived in the country.
But the latest census data from 2020-21, shows that figure is down to about 6.5 million.
Political instability in recent years, including several general elections, has led to more young Bulgarians leaving the country.
