Where: Hey Guys It's Barratt with the Gimpy Camper and we are at a campground today named Skull Island. No not the setting of the Movie Kong: Skull Island. We are just outside Chattanooga off of Hwy 58. I've actually been here before as I found this place on Freecampsites.net. It was in 2020 that I came by and it was closed down. Apparently, like most of our free camping areas here in TN people trashed it, didn't take care of it, and didn't resepect the rules so then it got closed down. A couple years ago Vista Recreation formerly known as camprrm acquired a contract to open a campground here. As with a lot of Vista campgrounds, they are a little more expensive than I prefer but I've been happy with all of my stays. We are currently on Site 11 here which is a beautiful site with a great view of the Sequoia Nuclear Power Station. Now this may be a deterrent for some people, but you have to admit that there is at least some level of interest because of this. Just don't think about the campground being named Skull Island and totally ignore the graveyard in the middle of the island. lol

General Information: Skull Island Campground is about 30 minutes from Chattanooga. The roads coming in are a touch on the narrow side, just so you are aware if you want to come in. There are 68 campsites here to enjoy but as usual, we will do our preferred campsites at the end of this video. I believe they have 50/30/20 amp service at all sites.

Cellular Speeds: All I had to test here for internet was my Firstnet service through AT&T which I actually thought would be faster here. My Insty Connect was actually a little slower with a download speed of 1.15 and an upload of 14.64 and with my phone, it was 4.3 down and 2.56 up. Surprisingly I seemed to be able to stream video fine.

Amenities: There is a large beach area to swim. At the time of our visit, it is mid-April and it is still a little too cold to test that out. There are two bathhouses, the one down near us was older but it was clean and functioned well. The other one appears newer but I haven't been inside there. The camp store had more items in it than I expected with some grocery staples like hot dogs, eggs, bacon, butter, and even some juices. They also had some ice cream and even a decent amount of camping supplies and swimwear. While there is not a boat ramp at the park here, there is one on the road just before entry. There is limited parking for boats/trailers but not a lot of parking. There is no sewer at the sites but the dump station was clean and appeared pretty easy to maneuver through.

Negative aspects of campground: The negatives are pretty limited but we always like to point out the bad with the good. A lot of the pull through sites were lackluster. Many of them are unlevel as well. I would only recommend two pull-through sites in the whole park and I'll give you a spoiler it's 25 and 26. The next downside is that the roads are single lanes but with two-way traffic. This is necessary because of the way some sites are situated and you need to back in from one way or the other. Now, with this park being small, it's doubtful that this ever causes too much issue. While I was filming i decided to drive through the other way but did have to pull over for two cars to pass, so if you happened to both have a camper, this could be an issue. A lot of the sites directly across from the boat ramp also had level issues front to back. A lot of them went down a hill and then flattened out for 15-20 feet.
