Best paddle of the outing, Jesus may disagree. We put in at Abercastle, which is approx. 6 miles West of Fishguard, and explored the coastline in a North-Easterly direction towards Strumble Head. We didn't get very far, and the reason for that is, because it was FABULOUS. There is so much to see, and do, so many caves, coves, inlets, paddle -throughs, gullies, e.t.c. that progress was very slow. If you want to paddle 300m offshore and by-pass it all, that's your decision, and many do. But for us, all the interest is close inshore, and if that's your bag, then this coast is up there with the best. The plan was to get to Strumble Head, we didn't even make half-way, and that is a measure of how good it is. There is no need to cut across bays on this trip, every turn is totally engrossing, I didn't want to miss a thing, and I'm sure Matt felt the same. I've done this trip before, in Oct '09, and why I didn't post a video, I don't know, I posted the Ramsey Island video, and that was sensational, but this was nearly as good. I must have seen 50 seals, they were mainly pups, and there was groups of ten in some places. Even though I'd done this trip, it was still excellent, and although I could remember some features, a lot had been forgot, or missed out. There was a hideous, biting, gnawing, Easterly wind, but close in under the cliffs, in the sun, it was beautiful. Paddle out into an exposed bit, and it was awful, so the trip was all the better, given the prevailing conditions elsewhere. I will no doubt return, and get to Strumble Head, in the future, the coastline leading up to it is really something special, I got a glimpse of it last time, but the swell was quite scary, and reflecting back from the cliffs, making it really uncomfortable.I will go back in the summer, and paddle this on a perfect summer morning..........I promise.
