Sustainable Agriculture in Coconut Cocoa farming by GVSR Prasad, West Godavari District
In recent years, global awareness of health and environmental issues has been growing up, and sustainability has become the keyword in discussions on economic development, particularly, in relation to developing countries.
"Organic farming/agriculture is a holistic production management system which promotes and enhances agro-ecosystem health, including biodiversity, biological cycles, and soil biological activity. It emphasizes the use of management practices in preference to the use of off-farm inputs, taking into account that regional conditions require locally adapted systems. This is accomplished by using, where possible, agronomic, biological,
and mechanical methods, as opposed to using synthetic materials, to fulfill any specific function within the system.
Mr. GVSR Prasad, Thadikalapudi, West Godavari District farmer has followed the Sustainable farming technics in his 25 acres of land for 15 years. He is cultivating Cocoa as an Intercrop in Coconut. He has got very good results by adopting the Rain harvest technology. He has arranged the trenches and Bunds between the rows of Coconut and Cocoa. Because of this, every drop of rainwater sinks into the ground and also avoiding soil eradication. Coconut leaves and cocoa leaves can also be used as fertilizer by spreading and decomposing the soil. With these methods, he is able to cultivate crops with completely organic methods without the need for fertilizer. Yields on the coconut, cocoa crops also increased by 50 percent over the previous years. These are the following benefits he is gaining.
enhance biological diversity within the whole system;
increase soil biological activity;
maintain long-term soil fertility;
recycle wastes of plant and animal origin in order to return nutrients to the land thus minimizing the use of non-renewable resources;
rely on renewable resources in locally organized agricultural systems
avoiding Soil eradication
promote the healthy use of soil, water, and air as well as minimize all forms of pollution thereto that may result from agricultural practices

భూమి ఆరోగ్యంగా వుంటే, పంట బాగా పండుతుంది. పంట బాగుంటే, రైతు బాగుంటాడు. వ్యవసాయంలో ఇది ప్రాథమిక సూత్రం. పదికాలాలపాటు రైతు పచ్చగా కళకళలాడలాంటే సుస్థిర సేద్యమే ఏకైక పరిష్కారం అని చెబుతున్నారు అభ్యుదయ రైతు గూడూరు వెంకట శివరామ ప్రసాద్. పశ్చిమ గోదావరి జిల్లా, తడికలపూడి గ్రామానికి చెందిన ఈయన, 2005వ సంవత్సరం నుండి ప్రకృతి వ్యవసాయం, ఆర్గానిక్ సేద్య పద్ధతులను ఆచరిస్తూ.. భూమి బలోపేతం అయిన తర్వాత, గత ఎనిమిది సంవత్సరాలుగా ఎరువుల మొక్కల అవసరం మేరకు కేవలం 10 శాతం మాత్రమే అందిస్తున్నారు.
25 ఎకరాల్లో కొబ్బరి, ఆయిల్ పామ్ వంటి పంటలతోపాటు, కోకోను అంతరపంటగా సాగు చేస్తున్న ఈయన, తడికలపూడి గ్రామంలో సుస్థిర సేద్యానికి చిరునామాగా మారారు. ఈయన తోటలో ఎక్కడ చూసినా రెయిన్ హార్వెస్ట్ టెక్నాలజీ ప్రధాన ఆకర్షణగా నిలుస్తుంది. వాలుకు అడ్డంగా కట్టలు నిర్మించి, నేల కొట్టుకుపోకుండా కాపాడటంతోపాటు, కురిసే ప్రతి వర్షపు చుక్కును నీటిలో ఇంకిపోయేటట్లు చేసారు. ఇదే ఇప్పుడు ఈయన సాధించిన విజయానికి ప్రధాన ఆయిధంగా నిలిచింది. ప్రస్థుతం ఈ కోకోతోట వయసు 21 సంవత్సరాలు. ఈ పంట జీవితకాలం 30 సంవత్సరాలు. ఈ తోటలో చెట్లు ఎత్తు ఎక్కువ పెరిగినప్పటికీ దిగుబడి ఆశాజనకంగా వుంది. కోకో పంట నుండి వచ్చే ఎండుబీన్స్ నుండి పొడి తయారుచేసి చాక్లెట్లు, కేకులు, బట్టర్ తయారీలో ప్రధానంగా ఉపయోగిస్తారు. ప్రపంచవ్యాప్తంగా ఈ పంటకు మంచి డిమాండ్ వుంది. ప్రస్థుతం కోకోలో ఎకరాకు 425 కిలోల ఎండుబీన్స్ దిగుబడి తీస్తున్న ఈయన, కొబ్బరిలో ఒక్కో చెట్టునుండి 170 నుండి 200 కాయల దిగుబడి సాధిస్తూ... ఎకరాకు 80 నుండి 90 వేల నికర రాబడి సాధిస్తున్నారు. పూర్తి వివరాలు ఈ స్టోరీలో తెలుసుకుందాం.
