Colour TV was still six years away in Australia, but the Apollo 11 astronauts’ goodwill tour was a big deal. Big enough for an ABC news crew to stock up on colour film and follow the three most famous men on the planet in 1969, as they toured the city of Sydney and were met by huge crowds.

Ironically, despite the forethought to capture so much of the day, this footage has never been reused. It was unearthed by archivists during production of the documentary Fly Me to the Moon, which viewers in Australia can catch here: https://iview.abc.net.au/show/fly-me-...

3:35 – Astronauts are taken on a cruise around Sydney harbour where the Sydney Opera House is seen under construction

4:42 – More crowds have turned out for autographs and handshakes at Mascot ahead of the astronauts’ departure aboard Air Force Two.
