Canto Opera: 雷鸣金鼓 5

[In this Scene the role of General Xia is portrayed by veteran popular xiaosheng 黄伟坤]

The war against the Qi state has been won. But King Qin refused to return the hostage Prince Zhao. Instead he issued a Letter of demand which proposed to make Princess Zhao as his Concubine, only then will he release the prince.

Princess Zhao has no choice as it is the only way for Zhao state to have their future king back safely. She holds a banquet to host King Qin, and accepts his proposal of marriage.

General Xia is outraged at this turn of events. He shows up at the banquet, raging with fury. But Princess Zhao is powerless under the situation. She had to appease King Qin, and demotes General Xia at each instance of his angry outburst towards her. She had to insult General Xia as well, so that King Qin would not harm General Xia. Minister Ma who has seen the Letter has to console General Xia (his godson) to give up his love for the Princess.

The ZhangJiang Cantonese Opera Company of GuangZhou 湛江粤剧团 on 2nd July 2012 at the Kreta Ayer Peoples' Theatre, Singapore, featuring the well-known veteran Cantonese opera xiaosheng 黄伟坤, with star huadan 麦文洁 as Princess Zhao.
