Continuous Charge Distribution, Electric field due to uniformly charged ring & how maximum field happens R/sqrt(2)

We introduce the concept of continuous charge distribution i.e. assume all the charges are closely bound together.

We discuss the 3 types of continuous charge distribution:
• Volume charge density (symbolized by the Greek letter ρ) is the quantity of charge per unit volume
• Surface charge density (σ) is the quantity of charge per unit area, measured in coulombs per square meter
• Linear charge density (λ) is the quantity of charge per unit length, measured in coulombs per meter

Charge density can be either positive or negative, since electric charge can be either positive or negative.

Using the concept of linear charge density, the electric field of a ring of charge on the axis of the ring can be found by superposing the point charge fields of infinitesimal charge elements.
The electric fields in the yz plane cancel by symmetry, and the x-components from charge elements can be simply added.
