Camp NaNoWriMo Virtual Write-In , ft. Prince Shakur: On Deepening The Emotional World of Your Story

Join us for Camp NaNoWriMo! This hour-long livestream is a place where we'll share some writing prompts to help you work on your Camp project, and where you can ask us writing questions or chat with other Wrimos from around the world.

Today, we'll have special author guest Prince Shakur joining us! Prince Shakur is a radical, multi-medium artist, organizer, and educator whose work centers on deepening black histories through queer, black, and liberatory lens. His journalism and essays have appeared in Teen Vogue, AfroPunk, The Cut, and beyond on the dangerous systemic and personal impacts of the carceral system, demanding complex truths about black political and creative icons, and gender politics in film. His visual work spans two Youtube channels: the award-winning travel and documentary series, Two Woke Minds, a channel dedicated to debunking the black writer/travel life, and a forthcoming short film.

Prompt #1 (5 mins, until :13):
Answer these questions for your main character -
What’s a secret that everyone knows?
A secret only some people know?
And a secret that only that character knows?

Continue with other prominent characters.

Prompt #2 from Prince (10 mins, until :36):
Explore a scene or story from your memory by reimagining it from an alternate perspective. Write the event from the point of view of a passing bystander, another person close to the event, a pet, or even an inanimate object. When choosing your narrator, pay attention to how objective they would have been, what they would have paid attention to, and what sort of background knowledge they would have had about the scene

Prompt #3 (10 mins, until :59):
Write a scene where a character discovers the secret of another character but by complete accident. How do they discover this - was it eavesdropping, searching through things, or some other method? How do they react to this new info? Does the other character find out their secret has been revealed?
