Synopsis:
One fine morning, Byomkesh comes across a rather unusual but interesting advertisement in the daily titled ‘Pather Kanta ‘(thorn of the road). Coincidentally, metropolitan Calcutta has been plagued recently by the murders of quite a few influential businessmen who have all been killed by being shot a gramophone pin embedded in their hearts. Soon, a podgy, middle-aged man, Ashutosh Mitra, a single businessman by profession, and a resident of Nebutola comes to seek Byomkesh's help with respect to the gramophone pin mystery. Mitra himself was the subject of an attack the previous day but his pocket watch which he wore close to his chest has saved him from a death. In the evening, Byomkesh and Ajit again pursue the mysterious Pother kanta advertiser. Ajit is sent out in disguise and Byomkesh follows him maintaining a safe distance. A beggar hands Ajit an envelope which reads, "Who is your Thorn of the road? What is his name and address? Clearly state what you want. Next time we'll meet at midnight. Please come alone to the Khiddirpore Road and walk along it. A man on a bicycle will come and take your written responses from you." After a few days, a certain Mr. Prafulla Roy arrives at their doorstep. He introduces himself as an insurance agent who is currently in trouble, and says he has responded to the Pather kanta ad. He asks Byomkesh whether or not he should pursue it or call the police. The meeting between Ajit and the advertiser now proceeds and the sting operation becomes fruitful when Bakshi successfully nabs the culprit who is none other than Mr. Roy.
