Trains, Trams & Buses at Box Hill - Melbourne Transport

Описание к видео Trains, Trams & Buses at Box Hill - Melbourne Transport

In this video we visit Box Hill, a major activity centre situated around 14km east of the Melbourne CBD. Box Hill is home to one of the busiest suburban transport interchanges in Melbourne built in the Box Hill Central Shopping Centre, which is served by train, tram, and bus services.

We start the video at the train station which is served by services on the Belgrave and Lilydale Lines, which is a rather unique station in Melbourne. Box Hill station opened on the 1st December 1882 when the line from Camberwell to Lilydale opened. Between 1983 - 1985 Box Hill station was rebuilt below ground as part of the construction of the Box Hill Central Shopping Centre. As a result it's the only underground station in suburban Melbourne. In terms of patronage it's the 10th busiest train station in Melbourne, and the busiest non-interchange station outside of the Melbourne CBD. It also has a number of other interesting quirks and features; it has a disused platform, has a McDonalds within the station, and was the last station in Melbourne to use CRT screens for passenger information displays. At the station we see Metro Trains Melbourne X'trapolis 100 EMU's arrive and depart, but we also see a couple of steam trains.

Next we head up to the bus interchange which was built on top of the shopping centre. The fully-sheltered interchange is served by 17 different bus routes operated by CDC Melbourne, Kinetic, and Ventura. It's the second busiest bus interchange in Melbourne (only Monash University is busier) and is a great place to do some bus spotting, especially during the peaks with a large frequent variety of buses seen. In the video we film some buses during the afternoon peak. Buses seen include some of Kinetic's and Ventura's oldest buses such as the Mercedes Benz O405NH and Scania L94UB (with NCBC 'Downtown Citybus' bodies) respectively. We also see the usual variety including Scania L94UB's, Scania K230UB's, Scania K280UB's, Scania K310UB's, Volvo B7RLE's, MAN 16.240's, and more.

To end the video we visit the tram stop on Whitehorse Road just outside the shopping centre. Box Hill is the eastern terminus of tram route 109 which operates between Box Hill and Port Melbourne via the Melbourne CBD. The tram line to Box Hill is one of the more recent tram extensions in Melbourne, having been extended from its previous terminus at Union Road in Mont Albert on the 2nd May 2003. We see a couple of C1 Class trams (Alstom Citadis 202) which are the mainstay on the route 109, but we're also lucky to see a couple of older A Class trams on the route.
