The Beast of Bodmin Moor has sparked stories and legends for decades about a black cat-like creature the size of a puma, roaming the Cornwall moors. Local livestock attacks have done nothing but fuel the rumors.

Since 1978, over 60 reports have been filed about sightings of a large cat-like creature with sharp, prominent teeth and white-yellow eyes. Witnesses described it as a cross between a domestic cat and a panther. The reports have baffled local police for decades.

Some people have recounted being chased by the powerful and fast creature. Others have recognized it in the distance, not quite believing their eyes.

British scientists have disagreed on whether or not the moors of Cornwall could be home to a panther-like animal such as the Beast of Bodmin Moor. The place has icy weather, and there is no appropriate food supply for such a gigantic creature.

Since its initial sightings in the 1970s, many photographs and footage have supposedly documented the Beast’s whereabouts.

Rumors about the Beast of Bodmin resurfaced after a lynx escaped the Dartmoor zoo in 2016. Sightings could have been misidentified as the monster during the time the lynx roamed free before being recaptured.

Along with some republished photos, this incident seemed to spark the memory of a retired zookeeper, who worked for the famous circus trainer, Mary Chipperfield. After closing her Plymouth zoo in 1978, she supposedly released three pumas and several other animals into the wild.

Cornwall’s landowners believe the pumas and their offspring are responsible for local livestock attacks and have likely died during cold winters.
