The appearance of the Devil is often taken as a sign of us giving in to our lower selves and our base desires. In this sense the card can be a symbol of prioritising pleasure over long term well being. It indicates doing the wrong thing according to our own standards, and doing so knowingly.
The chains around the necks of Adam & Eve can refer to addictions or keeping ourselves in bondage to a behaviour that is harming us or others in some way.
It can also serve as a warning that temptation may be coming our way and we need to be vigilant that we don’t find ourselves in a sticky situation.
Depression is another important aspect of the card, this ties in with the concept of illusion. A feeling of a lack of control has been named as a contributing factor in depression, this can cloud our judgement and lead us into the realms of sadness and diminishing self belief.
When the Devil appears upside down it can mean becoming aware of the illusions in our minds and finding the courage to break free.
If we look at the card we can see that chains around the necks of Adam & Eve are loose and they could remove them if they wanted to. This serves as a reminder that ultimately we are in charge of our destiny and, in this sense, the Devil reversed can be a positive sign that once we become aware of the fact that we’re being deceived, we can liberate ourselves from these negative thoughts and patterns.
