The appearance of The Tower relates to destruction. This can be in a literal sense, meaning the physical things around us but, as Waite himself says ‘It is idle to indicate that it depicts ruin in all its aspects, because this is self evident.’ Personally I'm more interested in how the card relates to the tearing down of the constructions of our mind. This can apply to certain beliefs that we’re hanging onto, or things which we think we know with absolute certainty but suddenly crumble in the blink of an eye.
By far and away the biggest structure that we build in our minds is our ego, this forms our whole identity and our sense of self importance. Now if we look at the characters on the card we can see that they're very well dressed and on top of the Tower there’s a crown that’s being dislodged by the lightning strike. This seems to hint toward the concept of pride.
Now it’s interesting that The Tower follows immediately after The Devil in the Fool’s Journey as one aspect of The Devil can be the illusions that create an inflated ego. But, as the saying goes; ‘Pride comes before a fall’. The walls of the ego can come crashing down just as easily as they’re built up.
Anyone who's experienced anything like this will tell you that it’s one of the most unpleasant experiences that you can have, but when we look back at it from happier times we often see that it was a necessary process that allowed us to evolve and move forward into a place of understanding.

Reversed

Waite says that the reversed the card means the same as the right way up ‘but to a lesser degree’.
However, he also mentions imprisonment, which can indicate the failure of built up energy to release itself. Sometimes avoiding a mental cataclysm can mean a missed opportunity for growth and progress.
